The Fenway Bowl is a college football bowl game played annually at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The first bowl game took place through a collaboration between Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events in 2020. Participating teams were from the American Athletic Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Fenway Bowl is one of the few bowl games played in a baseball stadium, with the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium and the Rate Bowl at Chase Field. The first-ever bowl game was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing it to be postponed. Eventually, it was played on 17 December 2022, with Louisville beating Cincinnati 24–7.

Fenway Bowl History

The Fenway Bowl championship stands as an esteemed NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision spectacle hosted within the iconic confines of Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Crafted and orchestrated by ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management, this annual football event showcases the prowess of teams hailing from the American Athletic Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Its inauguration in 2022 solidified its place as the fourth active bowl game held within a baseball stadium, joining the ranks of the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, the Holiday Bowl at Petco Park, and the Guaranteed Rate Bowl at Chase Field.

Football games at Fenway Park boast a rich history dating back to at least 1916, witnessing the clashes of various professional and college football teams. Among these gridiron gladiators were the Boston Patriots during the American Football League (AFL) era and the esteemed Boston College Eagles. However, before the birth of the Fenway Bowl, this historic ballpark had not hosted a dedicated bowl game.

Referencing Fenway Park's multifaceted sports legacy, organizers originally intended to debut the Fenway Bowl during the 2020–21 bowl season. Regrettably, concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic led to the announcement, on October 23, 2020, that the inaugural game would be postponed, a decision confirmed by organizers the following week. In its stead, the temporary Montgomery Bowl emerged as a substitute.

After navigating through the circumstances, organizers reinstated the Fenway Bowl for the 2021–22 bowl season, setting the stage for a December 29, 2021 showdown. The game received a boost when Wasabi Technologies signed on as its title sponsor on November 4, 2021. However, just before kickoff, the game was canceled due to COVID-related issues within the Virginia team, thwarting their anticipated faceoff against SMU.

Nevertheless, the Fenway Bowl's inaugural success finally came to fruition on December 17, 2022, as part of the 2022–23 bowl season. The clash featured the formidable teams of Cincinnati and Louisville, marking an unforgettable milestone in the storied history of the bowl and the revered Fenway Park.
