Jay Higgins is a fifth-year linebacker for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He is from Indianapolis, Indiana, and graduated from the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. As a high school player, he played for four years as a starter, thus getting recognition as a first-team all-state, all-conference, and all-county player. His greatest contribution to Brebeuf was guiding his team to the state championship and the regional championship while notching a record of 471 tackles. Higgins was a highly-rated tackler nationally and he also showed leadership as a captain during his junior and senior years. He had such an impactful high school career that colleges began scouting him early on, grading him as a three-star recruit that landed him with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

During his 2023 season as a senior for the Hawkeyes, Jay Higgins had become a valuable asset, where he started all 14 games and led his team to a total of 171 tackles, which was a school record for the most in a season. His 92 assisted tackles ranked second in the Hawkeye's all-time history. On the peak of this impressive season, Higgins was awarded with many honors, including first-team All-America by FWAA. It was his leadership on and off the field that earned him the awards of Roy Carver Most Valuable Player and Hayden Fry "Extra Heartbeat" Award, sealing his status as one of Iowa's all-time greatest defenders. Fortunately, Higgins in the 2023 season was topped off with a career-high of 18 tackles when he played against Penn State, most by any Hawkeye in a single season. His skills are beyond just tackling; he finished the year having five tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks, an interception, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble. That season was so dominating that he became a semifinalist for the Butkus Award. Moving on to his one final showdown at Iowa Hawkeyes; his leadership, hard work, talent, and commitment will be a significant factor for the 2025 draft.
