What is the rivalry between the Michigan Wolverines and Minnesota Golden Gophers called?
The Michigan Wolverines and the Minnesota Golden Gophers compete to get their hands on the Little Brown Jug Trophy. The rivalry for the little brown jug started in 1903 when Michigan discarded an empty five-gallon water jug in Minnesota’s locker room after a brutal game that resulted in a tie with a score of 6-6. This jug was purchased out of fear of potential sabotage from Minnesota. Oscar Munson, the custodian of Minnesota found the jug and brought it to Louis Joseph Cooke, the Athletic Director of Minnesota the next day. It was then decided to use the jug as the trophy for this rivalry. However, it became a traveling trophy only in 1909. The little brown jug trophy has a display of all the scores from the rivalries of the two teams. Moreover, the jug is divided with one half of the jug displaying the M of Michigan, while the other half displaying the M of Minnesota. Since 1909, both Michigan and Minnesota have become the recipients of the little brown jug over the years. The rivalry has also attracted an increasing number of fans over the years.
