In 2021, Shedeur Sanders was part of the Jackson State squad, which went on to win their first SWAC title since 2013. He also earned the SWAC Offensive POW honors, SWAC Freshman of the Year, and Stats Perform Jerry Rice FCS National Freshman of the Year. He was named in the BOXTOROW Pre-season All-American, SWAC Pre-season Player of the Year, and First-Team Pre-season All-SWAC.

In 2023, as a Buffaloes quarterback, Sanders was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year by the Associated Press, First-Team All-Transfer honors from On3 and The Athletic, All-Pac-12 honorable mention from the coaches, CU’s Newcomer of the Year, and Second Team All-NFF Colorado Chapter.

Sanders attended Trinity Christian High School and played as a quarterback for their football team for four years. At high school, he completed 805 out of 1,238 passes attempted for 12,627 years and 166 touchdowns. As a senior, Sanders led his high school team to the 2020 TCAL National Championship. In his sophomore year, Trinity Christian High School went 14-0, and Sanders won his second of three TAPPS state championships.
