The New Zealand dashing opener made his test debut against India in 2009. He is the first New Zealander to score a double century in ODI cricket. Guptill is an integral part of the New-Zealand cricket. Guptill also plays franchise cricket for Auckland and Barbados Tridents.

Guptill failed to impress in IPL and went unsold in this year's player auction. He scored 237 in the 2015 World Cup held at New Zealand.
