Australia World Cup Winner

Last Modified Oct 2, 2023 13:51 IST

No other team has been as successful as Australia in the history of the ODI World Cup. After all, they are the most decorated cricket team, having lifted the 50-over silverware as many as five times. No other nation has won it more than twice.

Building on their maiden title in 1987, the golden generation of Australia created history as they won three consecutive ODI World Cups in 1999, 2003 and in 2007. It was truly a remarkable achievement before Michael Clarke led Australia to their fifth tournament win at home in 2015.

On that note, let us discuss Australia's all World Cup wins in detail.

Australia ODI World Cup win - 1987

The 1987 ODI World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Pakistan, saw Australia lift their maiden ODI title. Under the leadership of Allan Border, Australia won seven of their eight games in the tournament.

Goeff Marsh and David Boon steered the team with the bat as the two openers ended up as the two highest run-getters for Australia. After beating Pakistan in the semi-finals, they faced arch-rivals England in the final in Kolkata.

Batting first, Australia made 253/8 with David Boon top-scoring with his 75. With Bill Athey’s fifty and Mike Gatting’s 41, the match went really close but two-wicket hauls from both Steve Waugh (2/37) and Allan Border (2/38) meant Australia won the encounter by 7 runs.

Australia ODI World Cup win - 1999

Australia started their dominance at the global stage after lifting the 1999 crown. They faced a high-flying Pakistan in the finals at Lord’s but won the clash comfortably by bundling out them for 132 runs in the first innings. A 75-run opening partnership between Adam Gilchrist (54) and Mark Waugh (37*) put the game to bed.

Late Aussie legend Shane Warne was instrumental in the campaign as he took 20 wickets across ten matches, including a four-wicket haul in the finals. The 1999 World Cup winning Australian team was led by Steve Waugh, who hammered 398 runs at an immaculate average of 79.60 in the tournament.

Australia ODI World Cup win - 2003

Australia broke the hearts of every Indian when they routed the Men in Blue in the summit clash of the 2003 ODI World Cup to lift their third title.

Taking the reins from Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting proved to the influential captain. Ponting struck a match-winning 140* in the final against India and scored a total of 415 runs across the tournament.

With some all-time greats including Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Michael Bevan, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee in the mix, the 2003 WC winning Australia side was full of venom and vigour.

Australia ODI World Cup win - 2007

The Men in Yellow made the hat-trick of World Cup wins when they defeated Sri Lanka in the 2007 World Cup final in Barbados. Adam Gilchrist’s superb knock of 149 runs in the first innings set up a perfect platform for Australia before a well-oiled Aussie bowling attack won them the game by 53 runs (D/L method).

The Ricky Ponting-led side were authoritative throughout the tournament as they won all 10 games, and piled up as many as five scores of 300+ in the World Cup.

Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting were the two highest run-getters for their side, with Hayden scoring 659 runs, while Ponting amassing 539. On the bowling front, Shaun Tait’s deadly pace brought 23 wickets for Australia. However, Glenn McGrath was on another level as he claimed 26 wickets and also won the Player of the Tournament.

Australia ODI World Cup win - 2015

Australia’s last ODI World Cup win came eight years ago when they beat their trans-tasman rivals New Zealand in the summit clash in Melbourne on March 29, 2015.

Their victory in the final was set up by eight wickets that Mitchell Johnson (2/20), Mitchell Starc (3/30) and James Faulker (3/36) took among them.

Australia lost just one encounter in their entire campaign and trounced Pakistan and India in the quarter-finals and in the semi-finals, respectively. Despite none of their batters ending up in the list of top five highest run-getters, the Aussie unit worked in unison and outclassed every other team in every department.
