He showed potent with the bat in the next season with 206 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 103.33 in Punjab's lower middle order. He picked 13 wickets in the 2015 and 2016 seasons respectively. The tally went up to 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 7.54 in IPL 2017.
Axar Patel was the lone player to be retained by the Punjab outfit ahead of the 2018 mega IPL Auction. The Gujarat all-rounder was signed for INR 6.75 crore.
Notwithstanding his heavy amount, the bowling all-rounder had a dip in performance. In IPL 2018, Axar scored 80 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 115.94 and picked just three wickets at an economy rate of 8.38.
He was released from the franchise ahead of the IPL 2019 auction. Delhi Capitals acquired the player's services for the 2019 season for INR 5 crore. He was the second-choice player retained by the Capitals ahead of IPL 2022 for INR 9 crore.
Axar kicked off IPL 2022 with 38 runs off 17 balls against Mumbai Indians in their first match to pull off a spectacular chase of 178. He was involved in an unbroken stand of 75 with Lalit Yadav as Delhi won by four wickets and 10 balls to spare. Axar was retained by the Capitals for IPL 2023 for his all-round brilliance and the all-rounder scored 283 runs and picked 11 wickets for them. Axar will be looking forward to having a successful campaign for the Capitals and aiming to help the team in their quest for their maiden IPL trophy.
