Daniel Vettori believes Kane Williamson will excel as New Zealand captain

Williamson is favourite to be appointed as the next Kiwi captain

Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has pinpointed that young batting sensation Kane Williamson would be the perfect choice for leading the country in the near future. The spinner believes that the youngster would do a wonderful job as captain and bring glory to his country.

Williamson will be the front runner for the captain’s role when the present skipper McCullum will play his last international series in February next year. Vettori felt that McCullum would leave cricket, knowing very well that New Zealand cricket would be in good hands.

"Knowing the inner machinations of the team, (McCullum) will feel that Kane is ready to step up into the role. He's got good leaders around him, like Tim Southee, so I think the team is in good hands. If Kane feels like it's the right time to step in and take over that mantle then he'll do a wonderful job,” he told Cricket Australia.

The 25-year-old, who is the best batsman in the world at the moment, is quite reserved on the cricket field and often lets his bat does most of the talking. This trait of Williamson, Vettori believes, may be the difference between their approaches towards the game.

"He'll do it differently to Brendon, who has been an amazing leader for the team over the last few years and taken them from strength to strength. I think he(Kane) would have learned a lot from Brendon and it seems like an ideal time to move into that role,” he said.

The former skipper heaped rich praise on McCullum and said that his career would be proudly looked upon by future generations. "I'm pleased for him. To go through such a long career being a wicketkeeper, an opening batsman (and) a captain, he's covered a lot of bases in New Zealand cricket and done an amazing job every time he's played for New Zealand.”

"I think people will look at his career fondly and hopefully revel in it rather than worrying about it finishing at this point in time. There's so many things to celebrate and I know that's the way Brendon will look at it,” he remarked.
