The two franchises played twice in the league stage of the 2022 IPL season where Gujarat proved their mettle by winning both matches. In contrast, CSK won all the matches in the 2023 IPL season against GT, one in the group stage and the other two in the play-offs, one in the Qualifier 1 and the other being the IPL Final.

GT locked horns with CSK for the first time in the 29th game of IPL’22 in Pune where captain Hardik Pandya was unavailable. In such a case, Rashid Khan captained and won the toss and put Chennai to bat first. After losing two early wickets, Ruturaj Gaikad, and Ambati Rayudu stepped up and steadied CSK’s ship. Ambati Rayudu fell short of a half century but Gaikwad continued along and hit a magnificent 73 off just 48 deliveries to help his team reach a competitive 169-5. Alzarri Joseph was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-34, while Shami, and Dayal got one wicket each as well.
Coming to chase 170, Gujarat’s top order faltered quickly with Gill, and Shankar going back without troubling the scorers. At 48-4, the side was limping but then David Miller took things into his hands and smoked a match winning 94 in just 51 deliveries, striking at 184! Dwayne Bravo’s spell of 3-23 alongside Theekshana, Jadeja, and Choundary’s wickets went futile. Narayan Jagadeesan gave him some support with 39 runs in 33 balls, but the low strike rate didn’t allow CSK to accelerate. Mohammad Shami picked an economical 2-19 while Rashid, Alzarri, and Sai Kishore ended up with one wicket too.
