The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy will take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19, 2025, to March 9, 2025. The tournament returns to the scene after eight years, and reigning ODI World Champions Australia will be looking to add the third Champions Trophy title under its belt.

The Australian cricket team has won the tournament two times in the past. After unsuccessful campaigns in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004, Australia got their hands on the title in 2006 when the Ricky Ponting-led unit defeated the West Indies in Mumbai. Three years later, the Aussies successfully defended their crown in South Africa, easing past New Zealand in the final.

Australia’s Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The Australian cricket team has been faced with multiple injury blows ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The two-time champions will play without the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Cameron Green due to injury-related issues. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis announced his retirement from the format ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The Australians will be led by Steven Smith in the upcoming tournament. The former champions have roped in Matthew Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, and Aaron Hardie.

Australia has been locked in Group B alongside familiar foes England, South Africa, and Afghanistan. The reigning ODI World Cup champions will open their campaign against England on February 22 in Lahore. Three days later, the Aussies will battle South Africa in Rawalpindi before battling Afghanistan in Lahore on February 28, 2025.

Bowlers

Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. He has joined Josh Hazelwood and captain Pat Cummins, who have been ruled out of the tournament due to their respective injuries.

In their absence, Cricket Australia has roped in Sean Abbott, Ben Dwart, Ben Dwarshuis, and Spencer Johnson to join Nathan Ellis in the seam-bowling department. As far as the spin department is concerned, wrist-spinner Adam Zampa will continue to lead the charge alongside Tanveer Sangha.

Reserves for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Australia’s captain for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

With full-time captain Pat Cummins ruled out of the tournament, Australia has named Steve Smith as their skipper for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Former Victoria and Australian cricketer Andrew McDonald will continue to lead the charge as Australia’s Head Coach in the ICC Champions Trophy. McDonald assumed the role in 2022 and has since led the Aussies to the ODI World Cup win in 2023.

Australia’s Coaching Staff for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
