After the Super 10 round of the ICC World T20 kicked off nearly three weeks ago in India, the level of excitement reached new heights. The best teams on the globe faced each other in the mega event and multiple records were broken.
There were stats written before it, which contorted afterwards. West Indies repeated their 2012 heroics to become the one and only team thus far to lift the trophy twice, and no better place to do it than at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Now that the tournament is over, here are some stats and trivia after the 2016 edition of World T20.
Highest batting average in World T20s
The law of averages have been defied; batting records have tumbled; and Virat Kohli has grown day by day. On completion of another impeccable innings at the Wankhede – he was unbeaten on 89 – he became numero uno in terms of average run making in the T20 World Cup.
Even the magical Mike Hussey falls behind the Indian Test skipper by an astonishing 32 runs per innings. Here goes the list of the best five averages in the shortest format’s number one trophy:
Player | Runs | Innings | Average |
Virat Kohli | 777 | 16 | 86.33 |
Mike Hussey | 437 | 16 | 54.63 |
Kevin Pietersen | 580 | 15 | 44.61 |
JP Duminy | 568 | 23 | 40.57 |
Chris Gayle | 920 | 26 | 40.00 |
Host in the final four
Out of the six times that the World T20 has been contested since 2007, only twice have the host nations made it to the semi-finals. South Africa, England, West Indies and Bangladesh, all failed to make it to the best-in-the-business stage, as only Asian neighbours, Sri Lanka (2012) and India (2016) went through.
While India lost their semi-final, Sri Lanka won their’s in 2012, but lost to West Indies in the final.
Year | Host | Elimination stage |
2007 | South Africa | Super Eight |
2009 | England | Super Eight |
2010 | West Indies | Super Eight |
2012 | Sri Lanka | Final |
2014 | Bangladesh | Group Stage |
2016 | India | Semi Final |
Ex-winners in semis only twice
England’s victory over Sri Lanka in Delhi not only sealed their place in the semis, but also knocked the Lankans out, besides accounting for the exit of South Africa. That meant holders Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the last-four stage of the tournament.
Only twice before in World T20s the defending champions made it to the semi final stage, first when 2009 winners Pakistan reached last-four in 2010 – where they lost to a special Mike Hussey effort – and next when the West Indies, after lifting the cup in 2012, were shown the door by the D/L method in the semis, courtesy of rain in Dhaka in 2014, where they lost to eventual winners Sri Lanka.
Hosts opening with defeat, again
Out of the six occasions of the T20 World Cup, only twice have the hosts tasted defeat in their very first match, which also turns out to be the opening game of the tournament. The first of those instances took place at Lord’s in 2009, as the Dutch surprised England with a magical run chase.
India became the second hosts to lose their first match of the tournament as they were shocked by New Zealand in Nagpur.
The list below displays the results of the hosts’ first games:
Teams | Edition | Venue | Result |
South Africa vs West Indies | 2007 | Johannesburg | South Africa won by 8 wickets |
England vs Netherlands | 2009 | Lord’s | Netherlands won by 4 wickets |
West Indies vs Ireland | 2010 | Providence | West Indies won by 70 runs |
Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe | 2012 | Hambantota | Sri Lanka won by 82 runs |
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan | 2014 | Dhaka | Bangladesh won by 9 wickets |
India vs New Zealand | 2016 | Nagpur | New Zealand won by 47 runs |
Highest World T20 knockout chase
Andre Russell’s six sailed over deep mid-wicket and as the hosts were dumped out of the tournament, the West Indians celebrated a place in the final and the highest successful run chase in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
This was also the fourth highest run chase in any of the World T20 matches. The record chase overshadowed Mr. Cricket Mike Hussey’s effort against Pakistan in 2010 when he belted Saeed Ajmal for 20 runs in the first four deliveries of the final over where the Kangaroos chased down 192.
The top 5 run chases in ICC World T20 knockouts have been stated below:
Target | Team | Opposition | Venue and year |
193 | West Indies | India | Mumbai, 2016 |
192 | Australia | Pakistan | Gros Islet, 2010 |
173 | India | South Africa | Dhaka, 2014 |
154 | England | New Zealand | Delhi, 2016 |
148 | England | Australia | Bridgetown, 2010 |
