Ex-winners in semis only twice
England’s victory over Sri Lanka in Delhi not only sealed their place in the semis, but also knocked the Lankans out, besides accounting for the exit of South Africa. That meant holders Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the last-four stage of the tournament.
Only twice before in World T20s the defending champions made it to the semi final stage, first when 2009 winners Pakistan reached last-four in 2010 – where they lost to a special Mike Hussey effort – and next when the West Indies, after lifting the cup in 2012, were shown the door by the D/L method in the semis, courtesy of rain in Dhaka in 2014, where they lost to eventual winners Sri Lanka.
