The ‘Fair Play Award’ is one of the unique features of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL fair play award is given to a team that plays in the right spirit of the game and shows sportsmanship the best throughout the season. The award is bestowed as a symbol of appreciation to the team that shows how cricket should be played in the widely discussed ‘ Spirit of the Game’.

Here we have the criterias that are taken into consideration in order to give the points and also to decide the winner of the Fair Play Award:

  1. In each game a team plays, they can be awarded a maximum of 10 points by the on-field umpires and the third umpire.

  1. The segregation of 10 points are as follows - 4 points are gained by upholding the spirit of the game with respect to the opinion of the umpires. The remaining three factors involve respecting the opposition, the officials and the rules of the game. The fulfillment of these three can produce 2 points individually.

  1. If a side receives 2 points in a particular area, it's deemed as “good”, while fetching one or no points is termed as “average” or “bad” respectively.

  1. The teams are ranked on the basis of the number of points they hold. However, the winner of the award is determined through the average of points mer match. It is calculated by dividing the total points won by a team by the number of matches they’ve played.

The previous season, Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals were jointly given the Fair Play Award. In 16 matches, the Royals gained 160 points while the Giants gathered 170 points. Both the teams ended up with the same average of 10 and thus, were declared the winners.
