A Super Over serves as a tiebreaker in One Day Internationals (ODIs), Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a Super Over, each team plays an additional over and the team scoring the most runs is named the winner of the contest. After a rule change in October 2019, a second Super Over is played if the first Super Over ends in a tie.
The most famous Super Over in ODI history occurred in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord's. Both teams scored 15 runs in the Super Over but England won on the boundary count rule. Super Overs have been more frequent in T20s due to the shorter format. The first-ever T20I Super Over took place in 2008 in a match between New Zealand and West Indies. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has also witnessed several iconic Super Overs since the first one in 2009.
List of IPL Super Overs
The first-ever IPL Super Over occurred in 2009 when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) ended in a tie at 150 runs, with RR winning. Since then, several matches have ended in Super Overs, including Kings XI Punjab's (KXIP) win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2010 and Royal Challengers Bangaluru's (RCB) victory against Delhi Daredevils (DD) in 2013.
The IPL 2020 season saw a record four Super Overs, including a dramatic double Super Over match where KXIP defeated Mumbai Indians (MI). Other matches featured KKR winning against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RCB edging past MI. As of March 2025, the most recent IPL Super Over took place in the 2021 season when Delhi Capitals (DC) faced SRH in Chennai. After identical scores of 159, DC won the Super Over by chasing the target of eight runs on April 25.
