Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans were the two additional teams that debuted in IPL 2022.
Gujarat Titans returned as the eventual champions of IPL 2022 whereas LSG were knocked out in the Eliminator round by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Gujarat Titans made it to their second straight final on May 30, 2023, but lost to eventual champions Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball thriller at their home ground in Ahmedabad.
In the four encounters they have faced so far, Gujarat Titans have completely outfoxed the Lucknow Super Giants, winning four. They are yet to lose a game against their newborn brother LSG, keeping their 100 percent track record against LSG intact as the Super Giants are yet to open their account against the Titans.
GT and LSG faced each other twice in the round-robin stage of IPL 2022. Both teams played their respective first IPL game against each other on March 28, 2022, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Titans pace bowler Mohammed Shami gave his side a perfect start with the dismissals of KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, and Manish Pandey. Hardik Pandya (33) and Matthew Wade (30) built up a crucial stand of 57 runs before the two fell in the middle to Lucknow spinners. Another sublime 60-run partnership between David Miller (30) and Rahul Tewatia (40*) kept the chase alive for the Titans. Abhinav Manohar and Tewatia pulled off the chase in the final over while GT needed 11 to win from the final over. Manohar smashed Avesh Khan for a couple of fours to start the final over before Tewatia smashed a boundary to take GT past the finishing line.
In their latest encounter on 7th May 2023, the Gujarat Titans’ openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill scored 81 off 43 and 94* off 51 balls respectively. They put on a partnership of 143 runs together and helped the Gujarat Titans put on a commendable first-innings score of 227 for the loss of just two wickets. The target was well outside the reach of the Lucknow Super Giants and they fell short by a margin of 56 runs.
