While large parts of India celebrated the teams’ thrilling one-run win over Bangladesh in the Group 2 encounter of the 2016 ICC World T20 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday night, there was devastation for a family in a small village in Uttar Pradesh, following this result.
An elderly man, hailing from the Bistauli village in Gorakhpur suffered a severe heart attack during the final stages of Bangladesh’s chase. According to reports, Om Prakash Shukla complained of severe chest pain after Bangladesh wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim smashed two consecutive boundaries off Hardik Pandya in the last over and eventually passed away.
However, Pandya turned from being a villain to a hero within a space of the next few deliveries, picking up both Rahim and Mahmudullah off successive balls to bring the Men In Blue back into the contest.
Mr. Shukla ran a grocery shop in Delhi for many years before settling down in Gorakhpur with his family. He is survived by three sons.
India play their next and final match of the Super 10 stage against Australian in Mohali on Sunday.
