Pakistan finished their forgettable T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with two points. They scripted a nervy win over Ireland in Match 36 in Florida on Sunday, June 16.
For a moment, it looked like Pakistan would suffer another humiliating loss when they saw a slump of five wickets in just a span of 23 runs. Babar Azam, however, kept his cool and remained unbeaten (32*) to ensure Pakistan went over the finishing line to chase down the paltry score of 107.
Earlier, Mohammad Amir (2/11) and Shaheen Afridi (3/22) wreaked havoc while Imad Wasim also bowled a superb spell of 3/8.
This was the last match of Group A and Pakistan have finished third on the points table. They have obviously missed out on the qualification spot, finishing with just four points in as many matches.
Ireland, meanwhile, were one of the massive underperformers at the T20 World Cup 2024 as well. They finished rock bottom on the table with just a solitary point due to their washed-out game against the USA.
Final spot for the Super 8 to be finalised on June 17!
As we move towards the end of the group stages, we have ourselves the seven sides that have qualified for the Super 8s. In a few hours from now, we will have the eighth team as well, which will join India, Afghanistan, and Australia in Group 1.
That last team is likely to be Bangladesh, who need just one point to seal their berth. They will face Nepal in their last group game. While Nepal can be a tough opponent, Bangladesh would feel confident to book their ticket.
Bangladesh need to avoid a heavy defeat (defeat approx 60 runs or above). If Nepal, however, thrash Bangladesh, doors will open for the Netherlands. The Dutch will be up against a wounded Sri Lankan team. While Bangladesh have four points, the Netherlands have just two and are highly dependent on Nepal.
