The Afghans finished second in Group 1 of the Super 8 and qualified for the semifinals with India from the group.

After opting to bat first, Afghanistan could only reach a modest total of 115/5 in 20 overs on a sluggish surface. "It's something like a dream for us as a team, making the semi-finals! The belief started to come when we beat New Zealand. I think the only person who had us in his last four for the tournament was Brian Lara, so, we had a chat among ourselves that we can't let his prediction go wrong! We stayed at the crease with bat in hand, we knew it wasn't an easy pitch to bat on, so the idea was to bat the overs and get as many runs as we can."
