“I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 crore” – BCCI secretary Jay Shah as India win 2024 T20 World Cup to end 11-year ICC trophy jinx

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has announced a whopping prize money for Team India after they beat South Africa in the final to win the 2024 T20 World Cup. Shah credited the team for unwavering ‘talent, determination, and sportsmanship’ throughout the tournament. He also reserved special praise for Rahul Dravid-led support staff who delivered behind the scenes.

The prize money announced is more than six times that of ICC for the winning team, which shows BCCI’s financial prowess.

The ICC rewarded the winning team with 2.45 million USD (approximately INR 20.42 crore), while runners-up SA went home with 1.28 million USD (approx. INR 10.67 crore). Semifinalists England and Afghanistan were also rewarded with 787,500 USD (approx. INR 6.56 crore).

Following Roger Binny's appointment as BCCI President in October 2022, the cricket board has been offering financial windfall to its international and domestic players, including equal pay for women cricketers.

“It is very hard for international boards to compete with it” – Michael Vaughan on BCCI

Former England captain Michael Vaughan recently said that other cricket boards can’t compete with BCCI. The reaction came as he was backing Jos Buttler’s remark that IPL should be free from international matches.

During a conversation with former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez and Australia World Cup-winning player Adam Gilchrist, Vaughan told Club Prairie Fire:

“I think IPL is so big now that it is very hard for international boards to compete with it.”

Adam Gilchirst echoed similar sentiments with Vaughan by pointing out the drawbacks. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter said:

"Domestic cricket is going to be compromised within the more established cricketing nations. For instance, the Sheffield Shield final overlaps with the IPL, so players will have to make a choice."

Meanwhile, the next ICC event will be the 2025 Champions Trophy, originally scheduled in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9.
