Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan produced a game-changing spell against India in their 2024 T20 World Cup Super Eight opener in Barbados on Thursday, June 20. The ace spinner had gone wicketless in his previous two T20Is against India but was third-time lucky.
Rashid finished with outstanding figures of 2/26 in his four overs to keep a lid on the Indian scoring rate. His scalps included the big wickets of Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli, and Shivam Dube. Rashid seemingly struck each time India were looking to go on a rampage.
Pant and Kohli were well set on 20 and 24, respectively, when the champion Afghan spinner sent them back to the hut. Rashid then trapped the spin destroyer Dube for only 10 to reduce India to 90/4 in the 11th over.
The leg-spinner now has nine wickets thus far in the tournament at an impressive average of 13.33 and an economy of 6.31 in five innings.
Fans on Twitter hailed Rashid Khan for his outstanding spell against a strong Indian batting lineup with the following reactions:
The praises continued for Rashid with one fan saying:
"What a spell rashid khan."
"Rashid Khan is truly one of the best," tweeted a fan.
"King Khan Rashid is back in peak form right in time for super 8s. Big match player, tournament will get interesting," a fan said.
Team India post massive total despite Rashid Khan's masterful spell
While Rashid Khan controlled things beautifully, Team India capitalized on most of the other Afghanistan bowlers to post a massive score of 181/8 in 20 overs on a tacky Barbados wicket.
The Men in Blue were led by a brilliant 28-ball 53 from Suryakumar Yadav after being in a spot of bother at 62/3 in the ninth over. He was well supported by Hardik Pandya, who scored 32 off 24 deliveries.
Apart from Rashid, only the in-form Fazalhaq Farooqi impressed for Afghanistan, with figures of 3/33 in his four overs. Meanwhile, Naveen Ul Haq bounced back after a sub-par start to finish with figures of 1/40 in four overs.
Afghanistan faces a daunting run-chase to try and win their first-ever T20I game against India.
Rohit Sharma's Men are yet to lose a game thus far in the tournament, while the Afghans were thrashed by co-hosts West Indies in the final group stage outing by 104 runs.
