Rinku Singh had a forgettable outing with the bat, scoring one run from two balls, in the ongoing third T20I match between India and Sri Lanka. The left-handed batter was surprisingly promoted to number four ahead of captain Suryakumar Yadav.
While skipper Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir would have wanted Rinku Singh to get more game time in the middle by promoting him, the left-handed batter could not make the most out of the opportunity. He scored a single off the first ball that he faced, and on the next ball, Rinku handed a catch to Matheesha Pathirana off Maheesh Theekshana's bowling.
Some fans on social media felt that Rinku is not fit for number four at the moment, while a few opined that the team management made a mistake by sending him to bat in the third over on a tough pitch.
Jokingly commenting on how Rinku's numbers go down when promoted up the order, a fan wrote on X:
"Rinku Singh might be the only person in the world who may not be happy when promoted."
Notably, Singh has an average of 40.60 and a strike rate of 172.03 when batting at number five in T20Is, while at number six, he has a strike rate of 177.01 without ever being dismissed. Hence, another fan questioned the team management's thought process behind Rinku's promotion and tweeted:
"What was the point to send Rinku Singh at no 4."
A popular statsman on X listed the last four scores of Singh in T20Is, highlighting the decline in his form. He wrote:
"Rinku Singh in Last 4 T20I Innings 1*, 11*, 1, 1"
Rinku Singh was not the only Indian batter who struggled in T20I series against Sri Lanka
As mentioned earlier, the series against Sri Lanka was not the best for Singh, who managed only two runs. Meanwhile, his teammate Sanju Samson got out for a duck in the two matches he got to play.
A fan talked about Sanju Samson's twin ducks in this series and asked how many more chances the Indian duo needed to cement their place in the team.
"How many chances did #SanjuSamson or #RinkuSingh need to show that they deserve the place in the team?" the fan questioned.
Another fan analyzed the fall of wickets of both Sanju and Singh, and wrote:
"More than Sanju Samson, frustrated with Rinku Singh dismissal. Sanju used to throw wickets like that but never saw Rinku Singh doing that. That was nothing shot if your team is two wickets down. He hardly gets opportunity in top 4 and today was the day to make it big. Disappointed."
India are 74/5 after 12 overs in the third T20I against Sri Lanka. Vice captain Shubman Gill is still in the middle, batting on 26, at the time of writing.
