Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan may be released from Team India's squad after 2024 T20 World Cup group stage - Reports

India Net Session
Gill has played non stop cricket in 2024 up until the 2024 T20 World Cup

The duo of Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, currently among the travelling reserves in the Indian squad during the 2024 T20 World Cup, may return home right after the culmination of the group stage. The Men in Blue have one match remaining in Group A, against Canada in Florida, and have already secured qualification for the Super 8.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Gill and Avesh have travelled with the rest of the squad to Florida in a chartered flight after Team India's win over the United States of America (USA). The upcoming contest is in major doubt due to the extreme weather conditions in the state, as persistent rains have led to a flood in the area.

The duo have not been called up to the main squad as there have not been any unexpected injuries so far. The situation could change if a player sustains an injury during practice or during the match against Canada on Saturday, June 15. However, the likelihood of that is quite low.

From India's perspective, Gill and Avesh may seem surplus to requirements. They already have an opening batter in the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal on the bench, while the presence of two seamers in the travelling reserves unit may be overkill because of the spin-friendly conditions in the Caribbean.

Their presence up until now was to ensure a readymade replacement in case of an injury. Due to obvious reasons, it would have proven quite difficult to rope in a replacement player from India midway through the tournament.

Gill and Avesh the pair released from the squad while Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed will stay with the team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had named four players among the travelling reserves. With Gill and Avesh set to leave, it leaves India with the option of Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed to choose from if any changes to the squad need to be made.

Following India's qualification for the Super 8, they have determined their venues for the upcoming matches. Their showdown encounter against Australia has been locked in for Monday, June 24 in St.Lucia. They still await the remaining opponents, but their matches have been scheduled for June 20 and June 22 in Barbados and Antigua respectively.
