Defending champions England beat two-time winners West Indies by eight wickets in a one-sided match in 2024 T20 World Cup Super-Eight clash at Gros Islet in St Lucia on Thursday (June 20). The Jos Buttler-led side won the match with 15 balls to spare. This was the first loss for co-hosts Windies, who won all their four games in the group stage to qualify for the second round of the ongoing ICC event.

What caught everyone’s attention was England mentor Kieron Pollard’s confusing expressions in the dugout. The former Caribbean captain did not look happy or sad with the result.

Phil Salt stars as England beat West Indies in 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 clash

A clinical batting display from Phil Salt helped England chase 181 in just 17.3 overs against West Indies in T20 World Cup Super-Eight match on Wednesday.

The wicketkeeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 87 runs off 47 balls with the help of five sixes and seven boundaries. Jonny Bairstow also stayed unbeaten on 48 off 26 deliveries, hitting two maximums and five boundaries. The duo shared a 97-run partnership for the third wicket to take the team over the line.

Meanwhile, captain Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali chipped in with 25 (22) and 13 (10), respectively. Andre Russell and Roston Chase bagged one wicket each for the hosts.

Asked to bat first, WI posted 180/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran and skipper Rovman Powell chipped in with 38 (34), 36 (32) and 36 (17), respectively. Sherfane Rutherford and Brandon King also contributed 28 (15) and 23 (13), respectively.

Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone picked up one wicket apiece for England.

England will next face play against South Africa at the same venue on Friday (June 21). Meanwhile, the Caribbean team will lock horns with USA in Barbados on the same day.
