Team India pacer Arshdeep Singh produced an incredible spell of 4/7 in four overs in the 2024 T20 World Cup clash against the USA in New York on Wednesday, June 12. The 25-year-old also achieved his career-best T20I figures with the performance, while also recording the best figures by an Indian bowler in T20 World Cup history.
After skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first, Arshdeep was into action straightaway with a double-wicket opening over. He dismissed opener Shayan Jahangir off the first ball of the match and followed it with the crucial scalp of Andries Gous on the final delivery of the over.
Following the impressive opening spell, Arshdeep returned to remove the well-set Nitish Kumar for 27 in the 15th over. He completed his four-wicket haul with another important wicket of big-hitting Harmeet Singh in his final over.
Arshdeep now has seven wickets in the tournament thus far at an incredible average of 10.42 and an economy of 6.34 in three outings.
His brilliance had fans on X overjoyed with high praise for the left-arm seamer.
Here are some of the reactions:
The praises from fans continued for Arshdeep with one saying:
"Arshdeep bowling like his US Visa got rejected and he got a score to settle."
"Arshdeep Singh creates history," tweeted a fan.
"This was a hell of a spell from this young man. He's definitely turning out to be one of the best bowlers of the tournament," a fan said.
Arshdeep Singh's heroics help India restrict USA to 110
Team India restricted USA to a sub-par total of 110/8 in 20 overs, thanks to Arshdeep Singh's incredible four-over spell. After his double-wicket first over, USA recovered to 25/2 before all-rounder Hardik Pandya struck to remove captain Aaron Jones.
Axar Patel then removed the well-set Steven Jones for 24 to leave the USA reeling at 56/4 in the 12h over. Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals despite some useful runs from Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, and Harmeet Singh.
Eventually, the USA crossed the 100-run mark and set India a reasonable total to chase on a much better batting wicket at New York.
However, India got off to the worst possible start, losing Virat Kohli for a golden duck in the first over to left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar. As things stand, they are 10/1 in two overs with Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant in the middle.
The winner of this contest advances to the Super 8 stage with a third win in as many games.
