A video of a fan in Los Angeles recreating Rohit Sharma's iconic slow-walk celebration from the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy presentation ceremony has gone viral on social media. Rohit imitated Argentina football legend Lionel Messi's celebration as he walked up to lift the 2024 T20 World Cup after India beat South Africa in the final in Barbados.
Messi did the slow-walk celebration after Argentina defeated France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar. After Rohit performed a similar act in Barbados, the same celebration was back in the limelight as Messi once again brought out the viral celebration after Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final on Sunday, July 14.
Meanwhile, a video has now gone viral on social media in which a fan is seen on a footpath in Los Angeles, recreating Rohit's iconic slow-walk celebration after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
India beat South Africa by seven runs in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados. Batting first after winning the toss, the Men in Blue put up 176-7 on the board as Virat Kohli top-scored with 76 off 59, while Axar Patel contributed 47 off 31. In the chase, the Proteas were held to 169-8 as Hardik Pandya claimed 3-20, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets each.
Rohit Sharma opened up on iconic celebration during interaction with PM Modi
After the Men in Blue arrived in India following their World Cup triumph, they headed to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the interaction, Rohit opened up on the slow-walk celebration and also revealed whose idea it was.
"It was such a big moment for us. We had been waiting for this for so long. The players suggested just don't walk up to the stage in a usual way and attempt something different," the Indian captain explained.
When the PM asked whether the idea came from Yuzvendra Chahal, who is known for his mischievous ways, Rohit responded:
"It was idea of Chahal and Kuldeep (Yadav)."
A video of Kuldeep telling Rohit to perform the slow-walk celebration when he goes up to lift the T20 World Cup trophy had also gone viral on social media. Interestingly, Shreyas Iyer also imitated the same Messi celebration as he walked up to lift the IPL 2024 trophy after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final.
