Team India captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya avoided a potential collision while attempting a catch of USA's Andries Gous off Arshdeep Singh's bowling. It was left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh once again who did the trick with the new ball during the T20 World Cup encounter between the two teams in New York on Wednesday, June 12.
Arshdeep got the final delivery of his over to jump off a back of a length and Gous tried to attempt the pull shot. The ball bounced a bit more than he had expected and hit him high on his bat, lobbing towards the area just behind the umpire at the bowler's end.
Rohit Sharma from mid-on and Hardik Pandya from mid-off were both charging at the ball and it could have ended in a possible collision. However, Rohit withdrew his attempt just in time and Hardik completed a good catch.
Here's a video of the dismissal:
In the absence of skipper Monank Patel, Gous was a crucial player for the USA alongside stand-in skipper Aaron Jones. Having already lost a wicket on the first ball, Gous' scalp is a body blow for the United States.
Arshdeep Singh gives India complete control in the powerplay against USA
Given how the pitch at the Nassau County Cricket Club in New York has behaved so far in the T20 World Cup, team India skipper Rohit Sharma was happy to win the toss and put the USA into bat. He couldn't have asked for a better start from his team as Arshdeep Singh trapped Shayan Jahangir in front on the very first ball.
Gous did play a good square cut for a couple of runs, but that was the only contribution he could make as he departed in the same over for 2(5). The USA need Nitish Kumar 14* (13) and Corey Anderson 1* (1) to shift gears with the score being just 59/4 after 12 overs.
