Pat Cummins became the second Australian to claim a hat-trick in T20 World Cups, joining Brett Lee, who did it in the inaugural edition in 2007 in South Africa. Cummins managed the feat against Bangladesh in the Super 8 clash of T20 World Cup 2024.
The Aussie Test and ODI skipper got rid of Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan in successive deliveries to complete the 18th over. Mitchell Marsh threw the ball to Cummins to bowl the final over and he struck to remove the well-set Towhid Hridoy for 40 off 28 deliveries. Bangladesh managed seven runs in the 20th over.
Marsh won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first. Mitchell Starc struck to remove Tanzid Hasan in the opening over. Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored with 41 before Adam Zampa dismissed him. Zampa, who has been a consistent performer in the tournament, got rid of Shanto and Litton Das.
Pat Cummins' hat-trick proves to be the 7th in T20 World Cup history
Cummins became the seventh overall cricketer to bag a hat-trick in T20 World Cup history. The New South Wales speedster joined Brett Lee, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga, Kagiso Rabada, Kartik Meiyappan, and Josh Little.
Cummins was in decent form in IPL 2024 for the SunRisers Hyderabad, who reached the final. He didn't play in Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Oman before bagging figures of 2/23 and 1/16 against England and Namibia, respectively.
Australia are only among the three teams along with India and South Africa to be unbeaten in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, have lost their only game to South Africa and notably defended 106 against Nepal to seal their spot in the Super 8 stage. It proved to be the lowest total defended in T20Is.
