Pat Cummins became the fourth Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in T20Is when they faced Bangladesh in their first Super-Eights match of the 2024 T20 World Cup on June 20, 2024.

Cummins first got rid of Mahmudullah on the second last ball of the 18th over. He bowled a slower delivery, and the right-handed batter could only manage an inside edge, which went on to hit the stumps. On the next ball, Mahedi Hasan hit straight into the hands of third-man fielder Adam Zampa.

It was the first ball of the last over when Cummins created history. The Australian pacer bowled a slower ball outside off-stump. Towhid Hridoy tried to scoop it over a short-fine leg, but it went straight into the hands of Josh Hazlewood as Bangladesh lost momentum.

Pat Cummins led the way for Australia, as the Bangla Tigers could only score 140 runs in their 20 overs. In response, David Warner was on fire for the Aussies; he remained unbeaten on 53 off 35 balls as Australia won the match by 28 runs via the DLS method.

As Pat Cummins became yet another Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in T20Is, in this article, we will rank all the T20I hat-tricks by the Men in Yellow.

#4 Nathan Ellis

It was the third game of the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh when Nathan Ellis became the third Australian to take a hat-trick in T20Is. It was the last over of the Bangladesh innings when Ellis first got the wicket of Mahmudullah. The right-handed batter reacted late as the bowl crashed onto the off-stump.

On the next delivery, Mustafizur Rahman tried to slog the ball, which landed in the hands of Mitchell Marsh at deep mid-wicket. The Australian pacer then bowled a slow ball, which Mahedi Hasan hit straight to Ashton Agar as Nathan Ellis got a hat-trick on his international debut.

However, Australia ended up on the losing side. Chasing a target of 128 runs, the Men in Yellow fell short by 10 runs. Eventually, Bangladesh went on to win the series 4-1.

#3 Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins became the fourth overall and the second to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup for Australia. The right-arm pacer was on fire in the death overs; he was perfect with his slower balls, and his over execution was on point. Cummins first got the better of Mahmudullah, then Mahedi Hasan ended up hitting the ball straight to the fielder.

The hat-trick ball was yet another slower one, as Towhid Hridoy didn’t get the pace he would have wanted as Hazlewood completed an easy match, helping Cummings take his first hat-trick in T20Is. The Australians then comfortably chased the target in a rain-affected game as they started on a winning note in the Super-Eighta matches.

#2 Ashton Agar

Australia faced South Africa in the first game of a three-match T20I series at Wanderers Stadium. Batting first, thanks to decent innings from Aaron Finch (42) and Steven Smith (45), the Australians put up a total of 196 on the board.

In response, South Africa lost early wickets and were reduced to 42/4 after seven overs. The left-arm orthodox Ashton Agar came to bowl the eight over and completely shifted the game in Australia’s favor.

Trying to up the ante, Faf du Plessis went inside out of the fourth ball but hit it straight in the hands of deep cover. On the very next ball, Andile Phehlukwayo was trapped in front of wickets as South Africa had their backs against the wall.

In the last ball, Dale Steyn got a thick edge, and Aaron Finch took a sharp catch at slip as Agar became the second Australian bowler to get the hat-trick. Meanwhile, Australia went on to win the match by 107 runs.

#1 Brett Lee

Brett Lee became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the history of T20 cricket. He achieved this feat in the 14th match of the 2007 T20 World Cup against Bangladesh. It was the 17th over when the former Aussie pacer made history.

Lee got rid of Shakib Al Hasan when the left-handed batter tried to cut a short delivery but only managed to knick it to the keeper. The right-arm pacer then bowled a perfect yorker to dismiss Mashrafe Mortaza. Lee trapped Alok Kapali in front of the wickets to complete his first hat-trick.

Bangladesh could only manage to score 123 runs in their 20 overs. Matthew Hayden led the way for Australia; he remained unbeaten on 73 off 48 balls as the Men in Yellow won the match by nine wickets and with 37 balls remaining.
