Rohit Sharma made his T20 captaincy debut during the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League when regular skipper Ricky Ponting decided to relinquish the reins of the Mumbai Indians to the Indian opener.
This proved to be a watershed moment in the career of Rohit and also for the Mumbai Indians, which went to claim its maiden title that year.

Sharma made his T20I captaincy debut in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli during the 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in the winter of 2017. India went to win that series 3-0. He then led India to the Nidahas Trophy title in 2018, before competing another series whitewash at home, this time against the West Indies.
