Rohit Sharma vs New Zealand in Cricket World Cup

Last Modified Oct 9, 2023 19:35 IST

At the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, Team India will square off against New Zealand in Match No. 21 of the ICC Men's ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. The much-awaited fixture will be played on October 22.

Against the fiery pace attack of New Zealand, consisting of Trent Boult, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee (if fit), India would need to start on a positive note. Hence, one of the key players for the Men in Blue will be none other than Rohit Sharma.

The Indian skipper has performed decently against the Kiwis but has a dismal record against them in ODI Cricket World Cups.

Rohit Sharma has played just one game against New Zealand in the history of ODI World Cups. His only appearance came during India's heartbreaking loss against the Kiwis in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final clash in Manchester.

Rohit, who had a dream campaign with five centuries prior to the tie, could only make one run in the game. Chasing 240 to win, Rohit was caught behind off Matt Henry's bowling in the second over.

New Zealand went on to win the game and qualified for the summit clash.

Rohit will certainly be looking to showcase his mettle this time around when he will face New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22.

Keeping aside his ODI World Cup appearance against New Zealand in 2019, Rohit Sharma has a pretty good record against the BlackCaps in overall one-day internationals.

Across 25 ODI innings, the current Indian skipper has made a total of 889 runs at an average of 37.04. This also includes five fifties and two hundreds.

Rohit played his maiden ODI against New Zealand way back in March 2009 and made 43* in that game. His best knock against them, however, came in an ODI in Kanpur in 2017. During that game, he made 147 runs off only 138 balls and helped India win the tie by six runs.

Rohit Sharma will be captaining India for the very first time at an ODI World Cup. His numbers against New Zealand as a captain are also decent.

Across five innings, the 36-year old has amassed 195 runs at an average of 39.00 and at a strike rate of 91.98.

Earlier this year in January, New Zealand toured India for a three-match ODI series, where Rohit captained India and ended up as the third-highest run-getter in the series. He made 186 runs at an average of 62.00 in those games, including a knock of 101 off 85 balls in Indore.
