Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar praised the West Indies team for clinching their second World Twenty20 crown and urged the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to support the players.
The West Indies beat England by four wickets in a thrilling World T20 final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday to win the title for the second time after 2012. The West Indies women's team also won the women's World T20 title hours earlier to make it two world titles in a day.
The men's team have had problems with the West Indies Cricket Board such as pay disputes, players' contracts not being renewed, and also a lack of support for the players.
"WI players emerged true champions overcoming challenges on & off the field. West Indian Board should support them & address their concerns," Tendulkar tweeted after the win.
West Indies skipper Darren Sammy also spoke about their problems with the board, after the team defeated England in the final.
"We had issues with the board (WICB), Mark Nicholas called us players with no brain. But all of us came together, these 15 men put adversity aside, played this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans. It was tremendous. I want to thank the coaching team, Phil Simmons," Sammy said at the post-match presentation ceremony at the Eden Gardens on Sunday evening.
