Metaphor ReFantazio has two stat systems: character stats and Royal Virtues, similar to the Persona games, which had character stats and Social Stats. The Royal Virtues primarily focus on what you can do in the regular portions of the world, whereas character stats are all about what you can do in combat. It may not always be clear what each stat does in this RPG.
However, each of the Archetypes wants different character stats in Metaphor ReFantazio. Having high strength won’t do you as much good as an Archmage, compared to a high Magic stat. If you want to know how each stat will affect your gameplay, we’re here to help.

Metaphor ReFantazio has five character stats: Strength, Magic, Endurance, Agility, and Luck. Each of these has an important role to play in combat, and each time you level up, you’ll automatically gain a point for one of these stats. You will get a stat point allocated automatically, and then you’ll receive a point to place wherever you want.
This will allow you to be fairly balanced, no matter how stilted you set your points to be. Many players will determine what kind of combatant they want the protagonist to be and will build accordingly. This makes character stats much easier to understand compared to Royal Virtues, which have several ways to increase their levels.
Your party members also gain two stat points per level, though you cannot influence this normally. It is likely based on what role they currently have in your party, though we cannot confirm this. However, below is the complete list of character stats in Metaphor ReFantazio:
- Strength: Increases physical damage in combat.
- Magic: Increases magical damage in combat.
- Endurance: Reduces incoming damage in combat.
- Agility: Influences hit rate, evasion and fleeing from combat.
- Luck: Influences critical hit rate and frequency of items dropped after combat.
If you plan on making the protagonist a melee combatant, you will probably want to focus on Strength and Endurance, and a bit in Agility. You’re able to pick different stats every time you level up, so if you change your mind, you can focus elsewhere. During my playthrough, I focused on Strength/Endurance, and when I changed my mind to make the main character a healer, I shifted to Magic instead.
One way to get extra stat points is through your equipment. For example, a ring you can pick up from Junah gives you +5 to all stats as long as it’s equipped - the Aeon Pearl Ring. There are plenty of ways to enhance your character stats in Metaphor ReFantazio through equipment. You also have one other way to improve on a stat.
At the beginning of Metaphor ReFantazio, you join the military - depending on how you answer Captain Klinger, you’ll upgrade one of the following stats:
- I’m stronger than I look: +Strength
- I’ve got a sharp mind: +Magic
- I can take a lot of punishment: +Endurance
- I’m small, but quick: +Agility
- I’ve always been lucky: +Luck
Other than that, your only extra character stat points in Metaphor ReFantazio come from leveling up - use those points wisely as you cannot re-allocate them later!
