In the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, Lawson finished 12th and after a rough Qatar Grand Prix, Lawson returned to his role as a reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and RB Formula One Team (formerly known as AlphaTauri) in 2024. Lawson replaced Ricciardo for the six remaining rounds of the 2024 Formula One season. However, Lawson finished 21st in the standings, earning just four points across the six races. On December 18, 2024, Red Bull Racing announced that Sergio Perez would leave the team after the end of the 2024 season and later confirmed that Lawson would be driving in place of the Mexican, alongside the defending four-time world drivers’ champion Max Verstappen.
