The women’s football category was introduced in the Olympics in 1996 at Atlanta. While the men’s team is restricted to players under-23 years of age with only three over-age players per team, women’s football does not have such age-based restrictions. It is considered a senior-level tournament with the best women footballers participating in it.
The first edition of women’s football was won by the United States, who defeated China in the final. In each edition, 12 teams participate to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. One place is reserved for the hosts, while there are a certain number of places reserved for various continents.
