A total 16 countries are set to play in the men’s football category and a total of 12 countries in the women’s football category in the 2024 Paris Olympics. In total, 28 football teams play in the Olympics including men’s and women’s football.
In the men’s category, the 16 teams are divided into groups of four each. The top two teams from each group qualify into the quarter-finals, and the winners move on to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-final compete for the gold and silver medals while the losers of the semis battle for the bronze medals. The participating teams can only include under-23 players in men’s football, with exceptions of three over-age players in the team.
In the women’s football category, the 12 teams are divided into three groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, along with two of the top third-placed teams qualify for the quarter-finals. The winners of this stage move on to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals play in the finals for the gold and silver medals while the losers of the semi-finals compete for the third place bronze medals. Unlike men’s football, there is no such age criteria for players in the women’s football category and senior team players can participate.
