Manchester City's Premier League title challenge resumes at home against Leicester City, following their crushing win over Bayern Munich. Last weekend's action saw Pep Guardiola's team close the gap to Arsenal to just six points while also having a game in hand on the Gunners.
The Foxes aren't performing at their best, but with a new interim manager in charge, many feel things can change. However, Dean Smith's new team is currently 19th in the league table and has failed to put the right foot forward all season, struggling to cope with the rigors of a Premier League season.
Manchester City Vs Leicester City fixtures
Manchester City are intent on catching league leaders Arsenal, as seen by their recent results. The Cityzens have won seven of their previous eight games and will want to prolong that trend, but their triumph in midweek may have an impact. Guardiola's team trounced Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final encounter, but the manager remarked that the game was much more difficult than the scoreline would suggest.
However, the Spaniard has said that in the past only to have his side utterly dominate their opposition time and time again. They do have a game in hand over league leaders Arsenal and face the Gunners in the near future as well as Chelsea, Brentford and Brighton. A win over Leicester City will help their ambitions of another title.
That’s what awaits Dean Smith and his new Leicester City side although the former Aston Villa and Norwich City boss has quite a task ahead of him, even without the challenge of Manchester City. The Foxes have been downright terrible this season and it didn’t shock anyone when Brendan Rodgers was sacked with three losses in their last five games. However, overcome the Cityzens and then Dean Smith only has to face one more traditional “big six” side in Liverpool. However, the Foxes will have battles against Leeds United and West Ham United, two sides in the relegation dog-fight with them.
Manchester City players
Few can talk about Manchester City without mentioning their Norwegian robot Erling Haaland. The forward has stunned English football with his performances this season, scoring 30 goals in 27 games. To put that in perspective, the last five Premier League golden boot winners scored 23, 23, 23, 22 and 32 goals to lift that particular individual trophy. In fact, since the turn of the century, only five players have scored 30 or more goals with a select few falling just short of that mark while Haaland could demolish the record for most goals in a single 38 game Premier League season which stands at 32.
But this Manchester City team isn’t all about Erling Haaland as Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and even Julian Alvarez have all been in fine form over the last few games. Grealish has four goal contributions in his last three league games, Alvarez has three and De Bruyne has 7 in his last ten appearances.
Leicester City players
Leicester City, unfortunately, don’t sit in the same boat as they’ve had nothing but problems across the field over the course of the entire 2022/23 season. They’ve conceded the fourth most goals, struggled to create too many chances but have somehow managed to score 40 goals. That makes them the tenth highest scoring team in the league which isn’t the worst place to be although that is largely down to the fact that Harvey Barnes (10 goals) has hit double figures for the first time in his career.
Beyond him, the Foxes have been dependent on James Maddison (9 goals and 6 assists), and with Barnes limping off in their last game, the attacking midfielder will have to be at his best. Simply because Patson Daka (4 goals), Kelechi Iheanacho (3 goals) and Jamie Vardy (1 goal) have really really struggled to hit the net this term. It does mean Manchester City might have an easy time although the only reason the Cityzens won the reverse fixture was thanks to a splendid Kevin De Bruyne free-kick.
Manchester City Vs Leicester City head to head
Manchester City has flourished in head-to-head competition, as the two clubs have met each other 126 times throughout the years, with City winning half of those. That's right, 65 wins to the Foxes' 32. City have won 10 of their last 12 Premier League games, including the last four in a row since a 5-2 home setback in September 2020.
