Prior to Liverpool facing Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final yesterday, a Spurs mascot asked Virgil van Dijk to join the north London club. The young boy has now revealed how the Liverpool captain responded to his cheeky request.

Just before kick-off, the mascot requested Van Dijk to sign for Ange Postecoglou's side as he was aware his side did not have top defenders. In the game against the Reds, Spurs were missing key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

The situation compelled Postecoglou to look at his bench and hand starts to Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray. While the Romanian is 22 years old and has some experience to show for, Gray is just 18 and was positioned at the heart of the defence against a tough Liverpool side.

As per the mascot, Virgil van Dijk wasn't impressed by the request. The young boy told talkSPORT radio:

"I just wanted to apologize for what I said earlier, I’m sorry for my actions because we’ve got Archie Gray and Dragusin! I don’t really know [what he said] but he didn’t seem very happy!"

Footballers don't usually get offended by what the mascots tell them, considering they are young, immature and pure souls. Van Dijk, who has been a towering figure at Anfield, seemingly did not like the comment made by the young Spurs fan.

Virgil van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton way back in 2018 and has won the UEFA Champions League and Premier League with them. He has played 296 matches for the Reds and has scored 25 goals despite being a defender.

Liverpool's fine form in the Premier League

With the departure of Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool fans were worried about how successful Arne Slot would be at Anfield. However, much to everyone's surprise, Slot has brought in a strong winning mentality at Liverpool.

The Reds currently sit strong at the top of the Premier League table, with 46 points from 18 fixtures. They have won 14 games, drawn four and lost only one, that too against Nottingham Forest way back in September.

Moreover, Liverpool have been solid in both attack and defence. They are the team to have scored the most goals so far in the Premier League - 47. Defensively, they are the joint second-best side, with just 19 goals conceded.

The other team to have conceded the same number of goals are Nottingham Forest, who sit third on the table. The only team with a better defensive record are Arsenal, who have conceded only 18 times so far.
