Liverpool have started their 2024-25 campaign on a high, winning four of their first five games. Arne Slot's side stamped their authority in the Champions League as well, with a dominating 3-1 away win at the San Siro.
However, they are also currently trying to solve the contractual situation of key players Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. All three of them will become free agents after this season.
Former England international Darren Bent has warned Liverpool to take care of the situation soon. The football pundit said in a podcast with talkSPORT:
"If they lost Van Dijk, they would be in absolute turmoil, Liverpool, without him. I like (Jarell) Quansah, I like (Ibrahima) Konate. I think they are both very good. I like (Joe) Gomez. Put them together without Virgil next year, a completely different kettle of fish."
Virgil Van Dijk is of immense importance to Liverpool
Liverpool have players like Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate, who might replace Van Dijk in the long run at Anfield. But letting the defender leave could be a huge mistake, considering the leadership qualities he possesses.
Even at 33, Van Dijk has a lot more to offer to Liverpool. He joined the club from Southampton back in January 2018 and went on to become one of the best defenders of his time. Not only did he win the Champions League and help Liverpool bring their 30-year Premier League drought to an end, he was also one of the nominations for the Balon d'Or in 2019 and ended second, seven points behind Lionel Messi.
Liverpool will be in action on Wednesday, September 25, against West Ham in the third round of the EFL Cup. However, Van Dijk is unlikely to start this fixture. He is expected to again lead the backline on Saturday afternoon, when Liverpool take on Wolves at the Molineux Stadium.
