Lionel Messi's Inter Miami are reportedly closing in on their second signing for the upcoming 2025 MLS season. As per journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Inter Miami have reached a $800,000 agreement with San Lorenzo for their versatile defender Gonzalo Lujan.

Merlo wrote in his post on X (translated to English):

“Gonzalo Lujan is Inter Miami’s new reinforcement. Between money and a debt owed by the player, San Lorenzo receives $800,000 for 40% of the transfer and keeps 60% of the economic rights for a future transfer.”

There has been a mass exodus at Inter Miami, with players like Matias Rojas, Leonardo Campana and Nicolas Freire leaving. However, manager Javier Mascherano is currently focused on building his side for the upcoming season, which is just a month away.

Bolstering the defensive third was one of the prerogatives for the Florida-based outfit and the acquisition of Lujan seems sensible.

The 23-year-old, Lujan mainly operates as a right-back. However, his versatility helps him to adapt to central defence as well as a right midfielder. The amount being mentioned hints at the transfer being one of the finest deals for the Lionel Messi-led side since the defender will help strengthen the Herons' backline.

Inter Miami interested in reuniting Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria

As per a report from Inter Miami News, the outfit is interested in reuniting Lionel Messi with his former Argentina national team teammate Angel Di Maria. The MLS outfit, co-owned by English footballer David Beckham, has also shown interest in Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman. The 38-year-old had joined Tigres way back in 2014 and has been a mainstay at the club.

Guzman has previously been a part of the Argentine national side. He has shared the dressing room with Lionel Messi before and has six appearances to his name. With just six months left in his contract, he could be a possible transfer target for the club.

On the other hand, Angel Di Maria, who announced retirement from international football in 2024, has been a superstar at Benfica. At 36, he has shown his brilliance for the Portuguese side.

In the ongoing season, Di Maria has registered a total of 24 appearances, scoring 11 goals and delivering six assists.
