Sophia Smith is an American football player who plays as an attacker for the NWSL club, Portland Thorns FC. She also represents the United States national team. Smith began her career as a college football player when she played for Stanford University. She was drafted into the NWSL in 2020, when she was the No 1 overall pick in the college draft.

Smith was named the NWSL Most Valuable Player (MVP) and U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2022 after leading Portland Thorns to win the 2022 NWSL Championship. She also won the NWSL Golden Boot in 2023.

Sophia Smith’s ethnicity is American. She was born in Windsor, Colorado in the United States. Both of Smith’s parents, Kenny and Mollie Smith are American. Smith was raised alongside her two elder sisters, Gabrielle and Savannah in Windsor near Fort Collins.

Sophia Smith plays for the United States Women’s National Team and has represented her country in the U-17, U-20 and the senior team categories. She also played at the college level for the women’s soccer team of Stanford University.

Sophia Smith plays for USWNT at the international level. In 2017, Smith created a youth national team record after scoring nine goals in six consecutive games. She was called up for the senior team for the first time in 2017 for a couple of friendly games against Russia.

Smith was a part of USWNT’s squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and both scored and assisted in their group stage fixture against Vietnam. She was also named Player of the Match for the game.

However, USWNT were eliminated in the knockout stage after a loss in the penalty shootout against Sweden. Smith was one of the three players to have missed their penalties during the shootout. Smith was then a part of the USWNT squad for the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The United States won the tournament and Smith scored one goal against Canada in the competition. Sophia Smith is set to represent the United States in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
