"Out of video memory" error is currently plaguing the multitude of gamers trying to play The First Descendant. The game has been facing some game-breaking errors. It is bricking up PCs while compiling the shaders after firing up the game for the first time. When compiling the shaders, an error message suddenly pops up saying "Out of video memory" and the game crashes.

This article dives into the potential problems that could be causing this issue and the possible fixes for those problems. You can implement them in your machine to solve the issue.

1) Try changing the power settings of the CPU in BIOS

The First Descendant "Out of video memory" issue mainly occurs in systems with Intel 13th-gen and 14th-gen processors. Instead of being a video memory issue, the problem exists in the BIOS. Intel has asked motherboard developers to use its official power profile in their BIOS. There seems to be an issue where 13th-gen and 14th-gen crash under heavy loads.

This issue could be because the motherboard manufacturers set up non-standard power profiles different from Intel's default ones. The power profile set by the manufacturers doesn't provide enough power to the K series CPU which is recommended to run on Intel's Extreme profile. The manufacturers recently pushed a BIOS update to fix the "Out of video memory" issue.

Step 1: Check for BIOS updates

Check if there is any new BIOS update available for your motherboard. Update to the latest BIOS firmware. This should fix this issue without further tinkering. If the issue still persists or there is no new BIOS update available, you can continue further through the steps.

Step 2: Manual tinker with your CPU settings in the BIOS

Set the power delivery limit on the 14th-generation and 13th-generation CPUs. For the Extreme profile set the Power Limit 1 to 253 Watts, Power Limit 2 to 253 Watts, and ICCMAX to 307 A. This could be a potential fix to the "Out of video memory" problem.

Step 3: Try Underclocking your CPU in BIOS

If the above-mentioned steps don't fix your issue, you can try underclocking your CPU. Oftentimes, underclocking the CPU limits the power draw of the processor and thus makes it stable for high-load situations.

2) Try changing compatibility and running it as an administrator

The game should complete compiling the shaders successfully once, after which it runs almost smoothly. The issue occurs only during shader optimization. Even a system with RTX 4090 with 24 GB prompts this error, which is one of the best GPUs to play the game any game.

Step 1: Try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 8/7

Right-click on the game application and click on properties. Under the compatibility tab check the box beside the option to run the app in compatibility mode and then choose Windows 8/7 from the drop-down. Make sure to disable full-screen optimizations. Also, check the box beside the option to run the app as an administrator. Then click on "Apply" and "OK"

Step 2: Try changing the compatibility for other apps

Navigate to your Steam apps folder in your default install drive. Click on common>The First Descendant>M1>Binaries>Win64 folder. Right-click on M1-Win64-Shipping.exe and then select properties. Under the compatibility tab, select to run the app in compatibility mode for Windows 8/7. Then disable fullscreen optimizations and check the option to run the game as an administrator.

3) Try updating your graphics driver

This "Out of video memory" problem persists for Intel and NVIDIA machines mainly. Try checking whether your graphics driver is updated. If not, make sure to update the driver to the latest release.

These fixes mentioned above should fix the "Out of video memory" issue of The First Descendant game. If any of these didn't fix it for you then make sure to contact the developers of the game about your issues. You can do this via email or social media. Likely, developers will soon push an update to iron out the bugs. Hence, patience is the key.
