In the beginning, the tournament was known as the Federation Cup. However, the name of the tournament was changed in 1995 to Fed Cup, and in September 2020 the tournament was named the Billie Jean King Cup.
The first edition of the event was held at the Queen's Club, in London and 16 countries took part in it. At that time many top players such as Darlene Hard, Billie Jean King, Margaret Smith and Lesley Turner all proudly represented their country in the event.
The United States led by Billie Jean King became the champion in the opening year. However, in the early years, Australia dominated the tournament, winning seven of the next eleven championships.
In recent years, the Czech Republic dominated the BJK Cup. They won the event six times between 2010-2020.
