Brickyard's inaugural race in 1994, was the first race other than the Indianapolis 500 to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1916. The inaugural race event of Brickyard 400 became the most attended event (back then) with more than 250,000 spectators. From 1994-2020 the race was held on the 2.5-mile oval for 400 miles. The race was put on hold from 2021-2023 to favor the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard which was run on a combined road course for 200 miles. However, the Brickyard 400 will return to its original form for the 2024 season.

When the race course was opened in 1908, the track surfaces were crushed stones and tar. Followed by numerous accidents, the track was repaved with 3.2 million bricks which led to its nickname The Brickyard. Over time the bricks were paved with asphalt and now only a yard strip of the brick remains exposed.
