About British MotoGP
British Grand Prix
One of the most iconic races of the season, the GoPro British Grand Prix is truly a jewel in motorsports and has given motorcycle racing fans some of the most memorable moments of all time. The Silverstone circuit hosted its first motorcycle race in 1977 and traded its places with the Donington Park since then. The 2018 British Grand Prix will be held at Silverstone on the same track used for the Formula 1 race.
The track – Silverstone Circuit
The track has undergone several changes since its inception in the 1940s. The current design, called the Arena circuit featuring 18 turns came into use since 2010 and is used for both MotoGP and Formula 1. The Arena circuit retains most of the straights and iconic high-speed curves while introducing a new section right after the Abbey to cover the newly-built ‘Arena Complex’.
First winner
Pat Hennen is the first motorcycle rider to win the British Grand Prix.
Riders from Britain
The current MotoGP line-up features three British riders – Carl Crutchlow driving for the LCR Honda, Bradley Smith representing Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Scott Redding riding for the Aprilia Racing Team Gresini.
Crutchlow’s performances are consistent so far in the 2018 MotoGP season and would be hoping to secure his second win of the season, after winning the 2018 Argentine Grand Prix earlier.
Danny Kent’s Moto3 win at the 2015 British Grand Prix is the most recent victory by a British driver.
Most successful riders
Valentino Rossi holds the record for most wins at the British Grand Prix. The Italian won eight races with six of them coming in the Moto GP class. Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner and Michael Doohan follow him in second with three MotoGP class victories at the British Grand Prix.
Latest from the British Grand Prix
Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso won the last year’s MotoGP race held at Silverstone and would be hoping to make it sweet double at this track. However, a resurgent drive from Lorenzo in the previous round at the Austrian Grand Prix would also mark him as the favourite, while the Championship Leader Marc Marquez would be chasing his second victory at this track.
