About China Open
The China Open is a professional tournament held in Beijing, China. It is played on outdoor hard courts, and is considered one of the premier competitions during the year. Every year, the China Open is held in late September and early October. While it is a WTA-1000 event, the men’s tournament is an ATP-500.
The China Open is currently held at the National Tennis Center in the capital city. Separated earlier by a Beijing event, it became a combined tournament in 2008. According to the official ATP and WTA websites, the 2024 edition of the tournament will be held from 26 September to 2 October and 25 September to 6 October respectively.
China Open History
The China Open was founded in 1993 as the Beijing Open, and was played at the Comprehensive Gymnasium in Tsinghua University. Between 1993-97, the matches were played on indoor carpet courts. However, there has been a switch to outdoor hard courts since 2004.
Novak Djokovic is the most successful player at the China Open historically. Having won a total of six titles, he holds a special record of never losing a match at the tournament. Meanwhile in men’s doubles, Bob and Mike Bryan are the only pair to have won consecutive trophies in Beijing. Interestingly, the China Open was the first tournament outside the USA to introduce hawk-eye (in 2006).
