History of ISSF World Cup
ISSF introduced an Olympic qualification system on the invitation by the International Olympics Committee and launched a series of World Cups to help the shooters in securing their Olympics berths. Most of the international and Indian shooters have secured their Olympics berth through ISSF World Cup events. Between 1986 and 2017, only individual and team events in 10m Air Pistol, 10m Air Rifle, 50m Air Rifle 3 Positions, and 25m Rapid Fire Pistol categories took place. Since the 2018 World Cup, 10m Air Rifle and 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team events have been introduced.
Initially from 1986 to 1991, the ISSF World Cup took place in 6 nations. In 1992, the number of ISSF World Cups was reduced to 5. From 1996 onwards, the ISSF World Cup has taken place in 4 nations. Germany’s Ralf Schuman is the most successful ISSF World Cup shooter with 39 Gold medals in 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.
ISSF Shotgun World Cup
The ISSF Shotgun World Cup was launched simultaneously with the ISSF World Cup by the International Shooting Sport Federation. The first Shotgun World Cup was held in Mexico City in 1986.
Shotgun events are of two groups, Skeet Shooting and Trap Shooting. From 1986 to 1997, the Shotgun World Cup was held only for men. From 1998 onwards, ISSF Shotgun World Cup has included women’s trap and skeet competitions. In 2018, at the Guadalajara Shotgun World Cup in Mexico, the Trap Mixed Team event was introduced. In 2020, the Skeet Mixed Team event made its ISSF Shotgun World Cup debut in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Vincent Hancock of the United States is the most successful shotgunner at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup with 12 Gold medals.
ISSF World Cup Final
The ISSF World Cup Final was launched in 1988, just two years after the introduction of the ISSF World Cup, by the International Shooting Sport Federation in Munich, Germany.
