The Kentucky Championship, formerly the Barbasol Championship, is scheduled for July 8–14 at Champions at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Players from both the PGA and DP World Tours will compete for benefits.
The inaugural Kentucky Championship, a FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour schedule, was held in Alabama in 2015 before relocating to Nicholasville in 2018. It was announced in August 2021 that the event would co-sanction with the European Tour starting in 2022.
As part of their strategic partnership with the PGA Tour, 50 players from the DP World Tour will compete in the event for a $4 million prize. The winner will also receive 500 Race to Dubai ranking points and 300 FedExCup points.
Furthermore, exemption from both tours through 2026; for PGA Tour non-members, through 2025; and entry into the Open Championship as the top non-exempt player.
Kentucky Championship 2024 History
In 2015, the then Barbasol Championship was introduced as an alternative event for the Open Championship in July, which took place in Britain and was held on the PGA Tour in Kentucky. The Grand National Course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Opelika, northeast of Auburn, was the site of the tournament's first three rounds in Alabama. Since the 1990 PGA Championship, it was the first PGA Tour event held in Alabama.
The event made its way to Kentucky in 2018 at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, south of Lexington. It was the first major event on the PGA Tour to take place in the state in 59 years, since the 1959 Kentucky Derby Open.
The Barbasol Championship was introduced as the Kentucky Championship in the 2024 PGA Tour schedule.
Dan Koett, director of media and public relations for the Kentucky Championship, stated, “Seeing things come to fruition here in the first month of the year, knowing we’ll be back July 11th through the 14th for some extraordinary golf, is something that we can all certainly be excited about.”
