About Madrid Open (ATP)
The 2024 Madrid Open will take place at the Caja Mágica in Manzanares Park from April 24 to May 5, 2024. It will be the 22nd edition of the event on the ATP Tour. The Madrid Open, also known as the Mutua Madrid Open is part of the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour.
The Madrid Open was inaugurated in 2002 as a men's only event and played at the Madrid Arena. Until 2008, it was played on the hard courts. Since 2009, the tournament has been played on a red clay surface. In 2012, for one year this tournament was played on blue clay courts.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal is the most successful player in the tournament history, who won this event five times in his career.
Madrid Open History
The Madrid Open was inaugurated in 2002, as a men's only event. It was held in the Madrid Arena from 2002 to 2008 and played on hard courts. Andre Agassi became the first winner of the tournament in 2002.
In 2009, the tournament was reborn with a new location, and new surface. In 2009, the tournament moved from Madrid Arena to La Caja Mágica and began played on a red clay surface. However, in 2012 the tournament was played on blue clay courts for just one year, and Roger Federer won the title that year.
Roger Federer is the only male player, who won the Madrid Open on three different surfaces: hard courts (2006), red clay (2009), and blue clay (2012). Rafael Nadal is the most successful player in tournament history, who lifted the trophy five times.
