The Miami Open is a professional tennis tournament that takes place every year in Miami, Florida, USA. The competition has both men’s and women’s events, and is staged during March every year. On the women’s circuit, the Miami Open is a WTA-1000 event. It is played on the outdoor hard courts of the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The Miami Open is also called the ‘Miami Open Presented by Itau’ due to sponsorship reasons, and is played at Miami Gardens annually. While the WTA singles draw has 128 participants, the doubles draw comprises 32 pairs. The Miami Open WTA has a prize money of $8,770,480 for the 2024 edition.

The idea of starting the Miami Open was originally conceived in the 1960s, when several professional tennis players toured the region. Between 1987 and 2018, the Miami Open was played at Key Biscayne, Florida before moving to the Miami Gardens. The first edition of the women’s event was held in 1985, with Martina Navratilova emerging as the champion in the women’s singles.

The Miami Open was officially founded by former player Butch Buchholz, the executive director of the ATP. Organized in Delray Beach at the time, the prize money of the tournament stood at $1.8 million. Some of the primary sponsors over the years include Lipton, Sony Ericsson as well as NASDAQ.

Miami Open 2024 (WTA) Venue

The 2024 Miami Open is being played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. It is a multi-purpose stadium that hosts a plethora of sports including tennis and American football. It plays host to the Miami Dolphins NFL team, as well as the Miami Hurricanes NCAA College Football setup.

The Hard Rock Stadium is in Miami Gardens - a small city in the Miami-Dade County of Florida. It has a capacity of over 14,000 for tennis and over 64,000 for American football. The arena has played host to the Miami Open WTA tournament since 2019, after it moved from Key Biscayne.
