About Spanish Grand Prix

The Spanish Grand Prix is one of the most historic and enduring races in F1. It was first held in 1913. Through the decades, the Spanish Grand Prix has witnessed interruptions due to global conflicts, but it has always made a comeback. Since its revival in 1967, the track has been hosting the F1 races for decades. It is one of the oldest races in the history of F1.

The inaugural Grand Prix was not an official F1 race; it was an event for touring cars. The race was held on a 300 km racing track built near Madrid and was won by Carlos de Salamanca with a Rolls-Royce. Since its inception in 1913, the Grand Prix has been hosting races on different tracks until 1991, when the Circuit de Barcelona was introduced.

Spanish Grand Prix History

The Spanish GP first appeared on the Formula 1 calendar in 1951. The first iteration of the event was won by Juan Michael Fangio while driving for Alfa Romeo. Since then, the race has shuffled between three tracks. The latest track is the Catalunya circuit in Barcelona, which has been used since the 1991 Spanish GP. The race features a host of historic wins. These include Michael Schumacher’s first victory for Ferrari and Pastor Maldonado’s first victory in Formula 1.

Spanish Grand Prix Circuit

The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix will be held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. The circuit is known for its long straights, fast-paced corners, and technical layout. It has a capacity of 140,700 spectators and holds an FIA Grade 1 license. Apart from F1, the track has also hosted motorcycle Grand Prix races in 1992 and the Catalan Motorcycle Grand Prix in 1996.

Spanish Grand Prix Configurations

The Spanish Grand Prix has undergone several configuration changes through the years. In the early 1990s, the track’s start and finish line were completely changed for the road team time trial cycling event. In 1991, the first elevation change took place to improve the fast-paced corners. In the early 2000s, the track length was reduced, and the Nissan chicane was removed to improve safety standards. For the 2023 edition, a new chicane was introduced between turns 10 and 11, thus reverting the track once again to its original length.
